Your ensemble has an alto saxophone instead of an oboe, a cello instead of a bassoon? Then you get the part for it.

With the Part Configurator you receive every instrumental part of a Paul Lorenz edition for another instrument as well – not simply shifted into another key, but re-scored for the new instrument: transposed, in the right clef and a playable register, checked for range, bass line, polyphony, breathing, slurs and brass endurance. It is included in the price; you receive your personal link by e-mail after your purchase. Every part carries your name as its license notice and is covered by the same license as your edition.

What is checked before every part

  • Range: The part lies within the playable range of the new instrument; where needed, whole sections move by an octave.
  • Bass line: No part slips below the bass line of the arrangement and turns the harmony upside down.
  • Polyphony: Double stops and chords are reduced to one line only where the notes left out sound elsewhere. Otherwise the part comes divided for two players (“Flute 1+2”, marked “div.” and “a 2”) – for ensembles that double their winds.
  • Breathing: Wind players get breath marks at musically sensible places; slurs that are too long are split there.
  • Brass: Trumpet, horn and trombone never get a part that stays too high or leaves no rests.
  • Readability: The right clef, no more than four ledger lines, a key signature of no more than six accidentals.

Download the PDF. The first time a part is requested it takes about a minute to set; after that it is ready at once – with your name as the license notice.

In an ensemble, parts move within the same or the neighbouring register family – a flute part never becomes a double bass part. In duo editions (one melody part with piano) the melody is open to every instrument that can play it. Keyboards, harp, percussion and guitar are not included, nor are voices and choir in an ensemble.

Frequently asked questions about the Part Configurator

How is this different from a transposed part?

A transposed part is only shifted. The Part Configurator re-scores the part for the new instrument: in its transposition and clef, in a playable register, with breath marks for wind players, without double stops the instrument cannot play (divided for two players where needed) – and it checks that the part never falls below the bass line of the arrangement.

Does the Part Configurator cost extra?

No. It is included in the price of every edition it is available for, for every instrumental part and every instrument offered.

How quickly do I get the part?

At once if the part has been created before. The first time, it takes about a minute to set; you can close the page, the link also comes by e-mail.

Am I allowed to use the re-scored parts?

Yes. Parts from the Part Configurator belong to the edition you bought and are covered by the same license – for your ensemble, with the same rights of use. Every part carries the notice “Licensed to …” in its footer. For public performances the organiser registers the performance with the collecting society as usual (e.g. PRS, ASCAP/BMI, GEMA).

What if my instrumentation is not offered?

Send a request from the Part Configurator after your purchase. Paul Lorenz looks at it; if he sets the part, you receive it by e-mail, and it becomes available to every buyer.

I cannot find my link – what now?

Under “Find my order” enter the e-mail address you bought with and receive the links to all your orders again.

Does it work for duos too – Flute & Piano, for example?

Yes. In editions for one melody part with piano – Violin & Piano or piano-vocal – the melody is also available for other instruments, such as Flute & Piano, Clarinet & Piano or Cello & Piano. The piano part stays as it is. The product page lists the instruments offered.
